Midnight July 14, the sold operator of F/V CHARLIE + CAROL contacted the Coast Guard that the on-board pump was not keeping up with flooding after his vessel hit an underwater obstruction. He estimated over 400 gallons of water aboard his vessel at that time.
The Coast Guard helicopter determined that CHARLIE + CAROL was listing heavily. A swimmer was lowered and helped the vessel operator into a life raft while the hoist basket was lowered to them. When the Coast Guard motor lifeboat reached the scene, CHARLIE + CAROL had sunk.
According to the Coast Guard, the vessel operator refused an alcohol breath test and will be charged with BUI. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
