Search suspended: two missing

The Coast Guard suspended the search for two missing boaters near Wales, Tuesday morning.

Multiple aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, crews from the village volunteer search and rescue group and the crew of the Sikuliaq, a good Samaritan research vessel, searched more than 32 hours along the shoreline and near Wales for the missing 23 and 14-year-old males. Weather on scene was 33 degrees and 2-4-foot seas with 25-mph winds, light rain, mist and fog

Watchstanders at the 17th Coast Guard District command center received a request for assistance from the village of Wales reporting the subjects were underway with no life jackets or survival equipment and were heard yelling for help at approximately 2:30 a.m. Watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and requested the launch of the aircrews.

“Coast Guard search and rescue crews covered more than 2,300 square miles in their attempt to find the missing boaters,” said Adam De Rocher, a command duty officer for the 17th District. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the missing boaters during this difficult time.”
