Ammonia Leak, One Dead

An ammonia leak resulted in the death of Charles Baker, 82, of Auburn, Washington. He was injured in the initial blast and ensuing leak of over fifty pounds of anhydrous ammonia aboard 80-foot F/V EIGIL B while moored at Sitka Sound Seafoods. Mr. Baker was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but he died of his injuries.
Mr. Baker had been at sea since his teens as a Sea Scout, in the Navy, and working in the fishing industry.
Mr. Baker’s son, with whom he co-owned EIGIL B, and grandson who is credited with saving his father’s life as well as attempting to save his grandfather.
